BA To MAT Teacher Education Track
The College at Southeastern has developed unique partnerships with Liberty University and NC State University to create a pathway for our graduates to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching.
Liberty University Partnership
The College at Southeastern has partnered with Liberty University to offer a Master of Arts in Teaching complete with licensure. Students majoring in English, Social Studies, or Interdisciplinary Studies are eligible for this program and can complete the program in 5 years by following the recommended sequence. The College at Southeastern majors listed below correspond to the following MAT concentrations:
The College at Southeastern, BA English – MAT Secondary Ed. (Eng)
The College at Southeastern, BA Social Studies – MAT Secondary Ed. Social Studies Endorsement
The College at Southeastern, BA Interdisciplinary Studies – MAT Elementary Ed.
- New College at Southeastern students planning to complete the MAT should major in English, Social Studies, or Interdisciplinary Studies and should follow the recommended course sequence provided by their advisor and/or the Registrar’s office.
- College at Southeastern students should apply to Liberty University’s MAT program at the end of their Junior year to ensure sufficient time for application processing. Students are accepted as “undergraduate special student status” (non-degree seeking) until their bachelor’s degree is conferred by The College at Southeastern. Students may take courses during this time, but they will not qualify for financial aid through LU.
- Upon acceptance from LU, College at Southeastern students should complete the following 9 hrs through LU during their Senior year:
- EDUC 500 Advanced Educational Psychology
- EDUC 606 Tests & Measures
- EDUC 521 Foundations of Exceptionality
- Following the completion of the bachelor’s degree from The College at Southeastern, students request an update in student status from LU and apply the above courses toward the completion of the MAT degree.
- Students follow the LU course sequence to complete their degree as suggested by the LU School of Education, http://www.liberty.edu/online/masters/teaching/

NC State University Partnership
The College at Southeastern and NC State University have developed a program that allows students to transition seamlessly from their undergraduate program at Southeastern to the Master of Arts in Teaching at NC State. Within 5 years, you can earn a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern and a master’s degree from NC State. The programs below require the following courses of study.
MAT Elementary Grades K-6 – Any undergraduate degree from Southeastern
MAT Middle Grades Social Studies – Degree in social science content, such as History or Political Science
MAT Secondary Social Studies – Degree in Social Science content, such as History or Political Science
MAT Middle Grades English/Language Arts – Degree in English
MAT Secondary English/Language Arts – Degree in English

- New College at Southeastern students planning to complete the MAT at NC State should major in English, social studies or interdisciplinary studies if they intend to pursue licensure at the middle school or secondary levels. Students interested in licensure to teach at the elementary level are free to pick any major.
- College at Southeastern students should apply to NC State’s MAT program during their junior year to ensure sufficient time for application processing. Students are accepted as “non-degree seeking” students until their bachelor’s degree is conferred by The College at Southeastern. To begin the process of applying to NC State, students should first contact either Dr. Micha Jeffries (if interested in elementary education) at [email protected] or Dr. Drinda Benge at [email protected].
- During the spring semester of their senior year at The College at Southeastern, students will take two courses at NC State. Following the completion of the bachelor’s degree from The College at Southeastern, students must request an update in student status from NC State and apply the above courses toward the completion of the MAT degree.
